The hot air balloon, the neon lighting, the sewing machine, and the stethoscope. All of them are French inventions, but, despite their name, the french fries are not French at all.

Actually, there is no consensus on why french fries are called like this.

- Some people say it's because of the method used to cut the potatoes.

- Some say it's because of the method of frying the potatoes.

- Other people say the name was given by soldiers during WWI. They tasted french fries in Belgium and thought they were in France because people there spoke French.

- Others even say it was created in other parts of Europe, like France or Spain.

The Spanish were, for sure, the potatoes pioneers, as they were the first to bring potatoes from Peru and Colombia to Europe in the 1500s. However, the french fries are probably originated from Belgium since some historians claim potatoes were being fried there in the late 1600s.
